Bed-Building for Sleep in Heavenly Peace

Saturday, March 23, 2022.

On its Jan. 14th lunch meeting, Pleasanton North Rotary members were introduced to the Alameda County chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP), an innovative charity that builds and distributes beds to the families of children who may have never had one of their own.

On March 19th, PNR responded to an invitation by SHP Executive Director Daniel Curtis to help assemble beds for future distribution to needy households in Castro Valley, Livermore, Oakland, Pleasanton, San Leandro, and potentially other communities in Alameda County.

Sixteen PNR members joined with 27 volunteers from the Rotary Club of Pleasanton, the Livermore Rotary Club and other District 5170 Area 4 chapters to build 15 beds at SHP’s woodworking facilities in Livermore. Curtis explained the shop was laid out with 16 sanding stations, each equipped with electric orbital sanders, to prepare each bed’s 16 pine components for staining and final assembly.

The Alameda County chapter of SHP has delivered more than 150 beds in the past 12 months, despite limitations from the COVID-19 emergency, Curtis noted. Beds are distributed two-to-three times per month. Photos from the bed-building event appear below.
