Annual Richard D. King Speech Contest Moves Forward

The Rotary clubs of Pleasanton North, Dublin Tri-Valley Evening conducted virtual versions of the first round of the annual Richard D. King Youth contest Feb. 26.

The virtual format, involving prerecorded video presentations of each five-minute speech on the theme of “Rotary Opens Opportunities” enabled District 5170 and participating clubs to carry out the competition while meeting necessary COVID-19-related precautions.

The three Area 4 Rotary clubs partnered on recruiting high school speakers from high schools, particularly those in Dublin and Pleasanton. Contestants presented their speeches over Zoom for safe and convenient viewing and judging this past week. Pleasanton North Rotary members saw two of the speeches presented as part of their weekly Zoom business meeting.

Although participants have been informed about the results and their awards, they will not be announced to the general public to assure fairness until after the District 5170 Area 4 Speech Contest on March 18.
